| Abstract: |
| For a long time, the conservation of historical urban areas in China has been focused on original
preservation, based on the authoritative status of historical prototypes. This has led to a divide-and-rule
approach focused on the conservation of historical and cultural cities and the renewal of old cities, which
erases relevant information in the historical process, and results in the historical urban areas presenting
structural characteristics of old and new collages. In the new era of urban-rural development, which
emphasizes the coordinated development of cultural heritage conservation and renewal, it is necessary to
rethink the relationship between the old and the new in historical urban areas, and re-understand its systematic
and overall value. Using deconstruction theory as a reference, viewing and thinking dialectically about the
relationship between the old and the new is essential. Deconstruction theory challenges the authority of
structure, and has a mechanism for reconstructing structure after breaking it. It affirms a new way of reading
and writing, emphasizing the importance of rewriting and transforming, rather than tracing historical
prototypes. If the historical city area is considered a city text evolved over a long period of time, then the
current act of conservation and renewal planning can be considered a kind of translation and reinterpretation.
Therefore, for urban heritage conservation planning, the emphasis should be on presenting the overall “spatial
significance” of the old and the new, making the layered historical context readable in modern environments.
The construction of contemporary historical urban areas should focus on the built environment, linking old
and new elements to systematically construct an open and diversified urban text. This construction can
promote the symbiosis of the old and the new, and realize the transmission and proliferation of the overall
value of urban heritage. Using the conservation and renewal planning of Xiangyang Ancient City as an
example, a modern urban development framework should be implemented. Faced with the dynamic
development of modern cities, the conservation and renewal planning of historical urban areas needs to take
the historical urban area as a whole, coordinate the planning of historical resources and stock land. A planning
system of “conservation control + conservation and renewal + renewal unit planning” should be enacted, and
the conservation framework should be transformed into feasible and effective urban construction actions. At
the level of “conservation and renewal”, the first is to promote the integration of new and old fields through
the integration of physical remains, mainly cultural relics and historical and cultural blocks in the heritage
conservation system, with the nearby stock land, the second is to promote the superposition and symbiosis of
layered space through the renovation of historical units. Under the overall planning of conservation and
renewal construction at the overall level of the historical urban area, the high-quality urban renewal is
promoted under the guidance of historical cultural resource management, and the renewal construction
provides the corresponding functional supplement for heritage conservation, which can promote the
systematic structural adjustment of the historical urban area and improve the quality of the space environment,
and realize the transformation from the confrontation between the old and the new to the symbiosis betweenthe old and the new.Furthermore, in the context of urban transformation and development in the new era, traditional urban heritage conservation and renewal
planning face new challenges. The re-understanding of the relationship between the old and the new in the historical urban area’s overall level and the overall
coordination of heritage conservation and renewal construction is only the first step. Future planning practice will face many challenges, such as the control
plan adjustments involved in the preparation of the conservation and renewal planning of Xiangyang ancient city, as well as the need for further research on toplevel
system guarantees, economic and technical issues, among other aspects. |
