Abstract: |
With the rapid development of society, the pursuit of healthy life has given new
value and significance to the environment, and the health benefits of the environment have
been deeply explored. This paper utilizes the Citespace visual analysis tool to generate a
timeline map of the development of research on restorative environments based on 346 English
literatures in the Web of Science database and 166 Chinese literatures in CNKI. Then the
contents and means of related research at home and abroad are compared and summarized.
Firstly, due to the early start of restorative environment research abroad, the choice of research
content, means and population needs is being gradually refined and expanded. Researchers continue
to introduce new measurement techniques and conduct multi-modal in-depth studies. On the other
hand, in China, research on the impact of the environment on human physical and mental health
has only increased rapidly in the past decade. The relevant domestic researches mainly focus on the
elderly, college students and other groups, which is closer to the actual problems in the domestic
social environment. Moreover, representative concepts such as “horticultural therapy” and “public
health” have been proposed.
Secondly, the basic theories and concepts of restorative environment are sorted out from two
perspectives, restorative environment and restorative needs, and the research contents and research
hotspots are categorized and summarized: restorative environment is sorted out from the overall
environmental characteristics and landscape elements, and the typical research methodologies,
means and conclusions of different research contents are sorted out. Most of the researches mainly
focus on the natural environment as well as plants and water elements, and lack of attention to the
more complex environment, other elements and their characteristics (such as color, sound, etc.) in
the city. Restorative needs, on the other hand, are approached from the physiological, emotional and
cognitive dimensions, and it is found that in addition to basic research on negative emotions such as
stress and anxiety, preliminary research has been conducted on deeper needs such as creativity and
memory.
Third, this paper provides a comparative analysis of material presentation, subject selection
and experimental methods in empirical research. Whether choosing photos, videos or VR materials,
control variables are the primary issue to be considered. The age, gender and social relationship
of the subject group are population characteristics that are often considered in research, while the
sample size needs to be based on the purpose of the study, the difficulty of the experiment and the
specific situation. Restorative experiments should reflect on key issues in experiments regarding
sample size validity, degree of pre-pressure and primacy effects, and researchers’ use of the Stroop
task and physiological measurements to aid in subjective evaluations has become a dominant form of
research.
Finally, this paper provides an in-depth reflection on restorative empirical research, updating
the research paradigm and research ideas, exploring population health from the perspective of
eco-health; and integrating multidisciplinary techniques such as environmental psychology,
environmental behavior, medicine, human factors engineering, and even kinesiology, as well as bigdata support. Thus, the findings of the restorative environment study are more applicable to field design and grounded in the real needs of the public and
social issues. |
