Abstract: |
During the mid-to-late stages of China’s 30-year urbanization, the construction of cities and rural
areas has changed. This shift has moved from rapid development to steady development, from incremental
growth to stock-based development, and from coarse development to refined development. In line with the
objectives of China’s new normal period, the education and personnel cultivation of universities should
align with these changes. This alignment requires unifying thinking, deepening understanding, overcoming
challenges, and driving reform and innovation. The undergraduate education of architectural education is
to cultivate students’ diverse disciplinary knowledge, practical skills, and the ability to adapt to the needs
of social development and talent knowledge structure reform. Based on the urbanization development of
Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, this paper discusses the dynamics and trends of architectural teaching
and discipline construction in the new normal period. The paper outlines comprehensive goals for modern
architectural education, emphasizing the integration of sciences of human settlements and disciplinary
cohesion. It cites Academician Wu Liangyong’s concept of “Sciences of Human Settlements” to highlight the
interdisciplinary relationship between architecture, urban planning, rural planning, and landscape architecture.
The paper underlines the scientific and technological aspects of disciplinary intersection, growth, and
integration. Furthermore, this paper discusses the inevitability of the process of the discipline from derivation,
growth, decomposition to coordination, integration, and organic development, based on the historical
development of Chinese and Western architectural disciplines. The paper also recognizes that academic
growth and personnel training in the Sichuan-Chongqing region is influenced by the local geography, culture,
and history, which creates a distinctive academic environment and development opportunities. To enhance
collaborative efforts in identifying scientific problems, cultivating theoretical advancements, and investigating
teaching methods and practical experiences, the paper suggests establishing cooperation between Chengdu
and Chongqing universities. It highlights the importance of disciplines construction, personnel education,
academic innovation, and cutting-edge research. Taking the joint graduation design of the integration of civil
engineering disciplines at Chongqing University ( winning the 2023 National Teaching Achievement Award )
as an example, this paper expounds the scientific and practical significance of collaborative teaching methods.
Additionally, the paper leads the teachers and students to discuss the theory and method of the joint teaching
of “human settlements”, takes two cases of the joint graduation design of the six universities in Chengdu and
Chongqing, the “Renewal of the Eighteen Ladder Old Community in Chongqing” ( 2022 ) and the “Urban
Design of the Jiulong Peninsula Art Bay Area in Chongqing” ( 2023 ). The paper provides students with acomprehensive understanding of urban society, history, culture, and spatiotemporal evolution, along with technical methods for regenerating, revitalizing, and conserving
mountainous urban spaces. In conclusion, the paper summarizes exploratory thinking on the reform and innovation of teaching concepts in the field of architecture education.
It proposes integrating “Human Settlements” thinking and technical content into senior undergraduate curricula to foster a comprehensive understanding and incorporate
essential aspects of architectural education. Additionally, it emphasizes the necessity of implementing broad and compatible teaching reforms in undergraduate architectural
education to enhance students’ adaptability to social knowledge. By considering these suggestions, the paper aims to provide a coherent framework for advancing
architectural education in the context of China’s new normal era. |
