Abstract:
Public space is an important place of activity for women, and a sense of security is one of the most decisive factors affecting women’s use of public space and is also the core demand of women for public space in residential areas. However, for a long time, urban planning has been in a state of “gender blindness”, which has directly or indirectly led to the phenomenon of gender violence. Current researches on women’s space security focus on the impacts of top-down policies on women but ignores the historical, cultural, and economic contexts in which these policies are embedded, resulting in a lack of opposition and activism on the part of excluded groups. The Women’s Safety Audit Tool provides a simple, highly flexible and adaptive method for participants to express their feelings, gain interpretive understandings of safety topics in public space, and examine safety hazards in public space. To this end, this paper conducts an empirical study of the public space in neighborhood F of city H based on the Women’s Safety Audit Tool, using semantic analysis, photo voice, and affective tendency analysis. By focusing on “security”, a highly subjective psychological feeling, this paper explores the path to enhance women’s sense of security in residential public spaces. The study shows that: Firstly, the spatial element, the facility element, the atmosphere element, the management element and crowd activities have an impact on women’s sense of security, of which the spatial element has the greatest impact, mainly manifested in the street space and green space in the subject’s cognition is easy to become the site of crime, and the subject has the highest degree of correlation. The atmosphere element has the least impact, mainly in the subtle influence on the subject’s sense of security through the creation of a humanistic and natural environment. Secondly, different age groups of women’s sense of security cognitive characteristics are different, there are obvious differences in green space, lighting facilities and crowd activities, mainly related to different age groups of women’s psychological differences, behavioral activities and growth experience. In terms of green space, middle-aged women think that dense greenery can bring them a healthy experience, while young women think that dense greenery will block most of the sight and light when they return home at night and is not conducive to enhancing their sense of security, and adolescent women think that hidden green space is prone to be the place where school bullying occurs, which will make them have disturbing associations; in terms of lighting facilities, the most frequently reflected by young women and adolescent women is that the light is too dark, especially young female tenants have a higher demand for light at night, while middle-aged women have a lower demand for light; in terms of crowd activities, young women and middle-aged women椠捡慲汥? 灥慬牥瑭楥据楴瀠慴瑯椠潷湨?ch participants pay attention, and participants have a better experience of safety at wide intersections, squares, and bright shopping streets, and they are more sensitive to the design of greenery and the intensity of illumination, and the well-kept greenery and bright lights make them feel safer; whereas, narrow green passages and dimly lit buildings makeparticipants feel insecure, and potholed floors, dark inter-house streets, and dirty sanitary conditions make them feel less safe. For this reason, three paths are proposed to strengthen the psychological support of the environment for women, satisfy the differentiated needs of multiple subjects, and promote the life-oriented turn of public space scenes to enhance women’ sense of security in public space. The specific performance is as follows: creating a safe spatial environment should firstly ensure sufficient and sustainable lighting conditions and pay attention to the planning and design of street space in the district, and secondly, it should emphasize the creation of a humanistic environment and social atmosphere, and improve the environmental intention through the design and control of the soundscape, smell, color and other elements; shaping a good safe environment should not only take into account the needs of the elderly and children, who are naturally associated with women, but should also considering the differentiated needs of female subjects. Scene identification by analyzing the daily activity preferences and interpersonal relationships of female characters, can improve the function of place use and create attractive place spaces. This paper utilizes the female safety audit tool to conduct empir
