Strategic Research on the Reconstruction of the Village Styles and Features of Macao’s Outlying Islands under the Concept of Sustainable Development: Taking Jiu’ao Village on Coloane Island as an Example
MAO Yishan,WU Yao,WU Yonglan
Abstract:
Jiu’ao Village is one of the only two remaining ancient villages on Coloane Island, Macau. After more than 200 years of social changes, the scenery of Jiu’ao Village is not as beautiful as before. With the urbanization rate of Macao’s reaching 100%, the villages on the islands of Macao have gradually been “forgotten”, which is affected by subjective and objective factors, resulting in the alienation of the environment and spatial structure of the villages on the islands, hindering the sustainable development of the city. Based on the important deployment of “sustainable development” in the new urbanization proposed by the country and and Macao’s development orientation as a world center of tourism and leisure, this paper focuses on social and environmental changes and further organic renewal of the living environment, activity environment and landscape environment in Jiu’ao Village. It proposes to reconstruct and update the buildings, landscapes, space and other aspects of Jiu’ao Village with the concept of “strict control of new construction, high priority in renovation and good match of style and appearance”, so as to achieve the goal of beautifying the environment and activating the village space of Jiu’ao Village, thus the spatial characteristics of the village will not disappear in the process of urban development, but to attract more tourists to this “forgotten corner”. On the basis of clarifying the actual needs of the reconstruction of the village styles and features of Macao city and Jiu’ao Village, the paper makes an in-depth analysis of various factors that cause the alienation of Jiu’ao village’s styles and features. As for Jiu’ao village in Macao, a new conflict appears between the villagers’ early life style and the modern one, and the phenomenon of left-behind population has further changed the actual living environment of villagers, presenting many problems in land use, architectural form, environmental maintenance and public facilities. By understanding the underlying problems behind the phenomenon, we can reflect on the one sided way of thinking and existing problems in the past. Therefore, in the context of the national implementation of new urbanization, combined with previous research, attention is paid to the demand of space users to build new village environment, so as to optimize, update and extend village space environment. “People-centered” construction of livable environment for modern urban villages emphasizes the reconstruction of environmental maintenance, spatial form and public services, and it puts forward strategic suggestions for sustainable development in terms of social culture, functional integration, construction conservation and physical environment. The specific methods are as follows: to update the external space of the residential building with the principle of uniformity, strengthen its overall connection with the village space and create a rural style with Macao’s cultural characteristics; to divide different functional areas of villages, subdivide villagers’ lives and tourists’ tourist functions, create a characteristic life axis and green ecotourism axis, and further improve the environmental quality suitable for living and traveling for villagers and tourists; to plan and renovate free space and facilities to enrich the spatial functions and activate venues of the village; to propose the use of public art intervention in village space as a means to enhance the sense of identity and cohesion of villagers, enhance the aesthetic quality of Jiu’ao Village through the model of art assistance in rural revitalization, and promote the revitalization and sustainable development of Jiu’ao Village on Coloane Island in Macao. This paper proposes that the “sustainable development” landscape reconstruction strategy has specific effects in culture, space, ecology and society. In terms of cultural effects, it promotes the inheritance and protection of traditional culture in Jiu’ao Village, interpreted the cultural connotation of villages from a new perspective, developed cultural tourism and cultural exchange projects with characteristics of Macao outlying island villages, and further promoted the development of cultural tourism. In terms of spatial effect, it reduces the impact of the spatial alienation of traditional villages and adjusts the spatial structure layout and landscape style in an all-round way, which has a certain effect on the natural landscape and architectural shape. In terms of ecological effects, it protects the unique natural landscape of Jiu’ao Village and conforms to the planning requirements of Macao city in the next 20 years, optimizes the construction of healthy living environment of Jiu’ao Village and promotes the development of ecotourism of Macao outlying island villages. In terms of social effects, it strengthens the residents’ awareness of local conservation and their sense of belonging, encourages more villagers to return to the village to live, and at the same time, through the villagers’ celebration activities with Jiu’ao cultural characteristics to display different cultural customs, create an atmosphere of leisure tourism in Jiu’ao Village, thereby driving the economic development of Jiu’ao Village.
