Abstract:
In the context of globalization, cultural competitiveness has gradually become a vital force for sustainable urban development, and cultural facilities, as the material carriers of urban culture, have become the subject of increasing interest. An in-depth understanding of the spatial and temporal distribution patterns and influence mechanisms of cultural facilities can provide a scientific basis for optimizing the layout of cultural facilities and the development of urban cultural space in a sustainable manner. Existing. Studies on the distribution of cultural facilities in urban areas have yielded some results, but they also have limitations. In light of this, the paper uses Wuhan City, a central city in the central region, as an empirical case, based on POI data of cultural facilities in Wuhan in 2010, 2015, and 2020, and combines local planning needs and classical practices to classify cultural facilities in Wuhan into five major categories: cultural and art exposition; cultural and art platform; cultural and sports leisure; cultural and entertainment industry; and cultural media, for differentiated research. Using standard deviation ellipse, mean nearest distance analysis, and kernel density analysis, the evolution of Wuhan's overall cultural facilities and the number and agglomeration patterns of various cultural facilities are analyzed. Various cultural facilities' spatial and temporal distribution patterns are investigated, and the manifestations of their spatial heterogeneity are studied. Combining local cultural facilities-related planning and research reports as conventional practices, a geographic probe is used to select five typical indicators of road network density, population density, gross GDP value, total land area, and per capita disposable income to investigate further the factors that influence their spatial distribution. Meanwhile, suggestions were made for optimizing the layout of cultural facilities in megacities based on the study of Wuhan’s cultural facilities. The following are the findings: 1) The spatial distribution of cultural facilities in Wuhan City is highly variable, with a continuous increase in quantity but a slow growth rate, and clustering in the central city, decreasing in a circular pattern and spreading to the southwest. Moreover, the layout of Wuhan’s cultural facilities is temporally robust, with a general distribution along the Han River and a high degree of agglomeration. 2) The spatial and temporal distribution of different types of cultural facilities is heterogeneous and can be divided into two main categories: the change in the number of cultural facilities primarily for public welfare, which is influenced by local policies; and the overall form of centralized lowdensity agglomeration, with the trend of spreading to the city’s periphery decreasing over time. The distribution is generally balanced. With a clear tendency toward cultural clusters, business-oriented cultural facilities are always concentrated in the urban core at a high density. Its distribution is concentrated in Wuhan’s central cultural district, with a high degree of overlap with that of Wuhan’s business district. 3) Five types of factors significantly impact the spatial distribution pattern of Wuhan’s cultural facilities; The level of economic development has the most significant impact on the spatial distribution pattern of cultural facilities in Wuhan City. Population size and regional area are the fundamental, time-stable factors, while traffic accessibility is the reinforcing factor. However, with the improvement of the regional road network system, the traffic factors reduce the restrictions on the layout of cultural facilities. The density of road networks may have less of an impact on the layout of cultural facilities. However, different types of cultural facilities are influenced by a variety of factors. The economy and population size influence the layout of operational and cultural facilities. In contrast, the layout of public welfare cultural facilities is more constrained by the area of regional development, and factors such as population indicators and traffic accessibility should be taken into account more when planning the layout. Given the significance of the layout of cultural facilities to urban development, this paper combines the study of the layout of cultural facilities in Wuhan. It offers three recommendations for optimizing the layout of cultural facilities in China's megacities: 1) on resource allocation, advocate the combination of rigid and elastic elements for a differentiated layout; 2) on the planning system, integrate with urban development and strengthen the planning convergence; 3) regarding the layout of facilities, capitalize on the advantages of resources and shape the characteristic cultural space.
