The Construction of Neighborhood Social Space System of Neo-Suburban Communities:A Study of the Nanguo Village
LEI Anni
Abstract:
Under the impact of limited urban living environment, including limited living space, limited greenery and distant neighborhood relationships, citizens in China have maintained the desire for an idyllic living style for a long time. Since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, people have come to realize the importance of interpersonal association and goodwill in joint response to difficulties, and an idyllic countryside lifestyle has become more desirable than before. The spatial elements that incubate supportive community relationships has become one of the key elements in constructing new communities. Meanwhile, regarding the rural vitalization policy as the background, the construction of neo-suburban communities with complex functions and unique community characteristics are also acting as triggers that are targeting the lead of regional developments of broad rural areas in China. Different from traditional suburban communities with single residential function, neo-suburban communities with multiple functions are supposed to have regional influence, attracting the gathering of population, business and public activities. At the same time, this new form of communities also emphasizes inclusive development of local villagers that are living within radiation areas. Therefore, the definition of the neo-suburban communities is one type of residential community with complex functions, emphasis on regional coordinated development and treasure the cultural characteristics and legacies. From the perspective of industrial development, the migration of urban residents to the neo-suburban communities would bring more opportunities for the tertiary industry development within the surrounding rural areas and promote the optimization and transformation of agricultural production. From the perspective of cultural heritage, the developing concept of neo-suburban communities is to value the rural and traditional culture, and reproduce those legacies with modern design methods, which would be conducive to the iteration and propagation of local culture. From the perspective of regional ecological effect, the trending landscape design concept of neo-suburban communities is ecologically friendly, emphasizing on the on-site reuse of water, soil and greenery. It is also an experimental path of exploring the harmonious way of coexistence between human society and natural habitat. From the perspective of regional functions, the construction of neo-suburban communities not only provides urban residents with more living options, but also provides leisure opportunities including outdoor activities, cultural activities, health care activities and other activities that enrich the lifestyle of urban residents. With the developing process of urban-rural integration, the cultural and spatial merge of city dwellers and village people is inevitable. How to design the environment and coliving strategy that are considerable enough for different people to communicate, to work, to learn with each other is challenging. When we discuss the establishment of a friendly and intimate community, the physical and mental elements come out at the same time. As the carrier of daily life, material space is critical for guiding lifestyle, that makes the mechanism of social activities a crucial reference for spatial constructions. While planners and designers are struggling about constructing an intimate and supportive community, some residents in neo-suburban communities have developed close social networks without kinship. This phenomenon has revealed a fact that under specific conditions, healthy social networks could be incubated spontaneously. With Nanguo Village in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as an example, the paper is trying to discuss the construction mechanism of social networks and its corresponding spatial characteristics of this neo-suburban community in China by on-site investigation and residents’ interviews. The research concludes the principles of public space system construction that promotes residents’ communication in the neo-suburban community. Firstly, constructing multi-function space is critical for supporting residents’ social activities. Diverse usage could encourage residents’ longer and broader participation in public spaces and creates more possibilities of encounters that could lay the foundation of neighborhood social networks by daily activities. Secondly, the spatial characteristics of the neo-suburban communities should be clear and sensible. In communities with clear features, residents tend to have a stronger sense of belonging, and that is a natural bond within the neighborhood. Thirdly, natural and harmonious public spaces are strong drives of social activities. With various choices of outdoor events and pleasant environment, residents are more motivated to go out and socialize with others. Last, the public space system should be multi-layered. Since social networks have specific structures that include different groups of people, various sizes of activities, diverse options of events, etc., public spaces are supposed to fulfill different spatial needs of community activities. In this way, residents would be more dedicated and dependent on the community networks.
