Modern manor in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is a group of
buildings that has different styles and functions nicely for various purposes. It is
established based on the local architectural culture tradition and compatible with
the western architectural style. It has formed under the specific circumstance of
the development of modernization in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It has
distinct regional characteristics that are unique in social, economic, and cultural
values. The study of the manors is essential as it has well penetrated to modern
architecture in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The manor research in the field of architecture needs to be based on specific
material forms. However, the number of existing manor architectures in China
is small, and the manors are scattered and lack of attention for a long time.
Therefore, the existing research is mostly case analysis, and the objects of study
are mainly large-scale landlord manors in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There is
little research on modern manor in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region which is
rich in quantity in reality. Besides, Most of these studies only focus on the manor
building itself. There is a lack of detailed discussion on the identity of the manor
owner, the construction process, the spatial relationship between the building and
the surrounding houses and fields, as well as the organizational order and usage
patterns of each functional space in the manors.
Based on the field survey of modern manors in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous
Region, this paper analyzes and summarizes the historical origin, types, location
layout, functional organization, and formal characteristics of manor buildings
by comprehensively considering the historical, regional, and national cultural
background of their formation and development. In order to grasp the overall
characteristics and historical value of modern manors in Guangxi Zhuang
Autonomous Region comprehensively and objectively, this paper aims to explore
the source power of its establishment, development, and evolution deeply. The
study is essential to promote the research, protection, and inheritance of modern
architecture in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.Firstly, this paper studies the historical background, existing samples, and the distribution of modern manors in Guangxi
Zhuang Autonomous Region, summarizes the historical, regional, cultural, and economic factors that affect the formation and
development of manor architecture, and puts forward that: modern manor came forth in the complex historical, social, and
regional background. It is the result of the interaction between wealth and power, and it is the product of the homogenization
of local clans and warlords. It has distinct regionality, nativity, and continuity. The architectural space and landed property of
such manors complement each other. Taking clan as the social relationship link, domestic helper as the economic model base,
with military defense function, the modern manor has the space organization and operation modes to show the power as the
main purpose of construction. Meanwhile, The existing typical samples are not evenly distributed in the region, and generally
show a more concentrated trend in the east of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which coincides with the overall pattern
of the gradual infiltration of western architectural culture from coastal and port opening areas to the inland, which affects the
germination and development of modern architecture in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Secondly, combined analysis of typical cases, the study analyzes the main types and characteristics of the manors from site
layout, spatial form and functional organization, and puts forward the claims that Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region modern
manor emphasizes the relationship between manor architecture and landscape and settlement in the location layout; it shows
the continuation of traditional residences and gardens in spatial forms, reflects the owner’s experience, the influence of foreign
culture and unrealistic comparison trend from architectural styles. It integrates the functions and complex modes of operation
such as living life, production and operation, social organization and military defense. In this way, it has the outstanding
performance characteristics of obeying etiquette, showing power, strong defensiveness, Chinese and Western hybrids, as well
as rich social, economic, political and cultural attributes and connotations.
Finally, the paper further refines the historical value and cultural connotation of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
modern manor, and puts forward that Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region modern manor inherits and develops traditional
architectural forms. By actively absorbing the foreign architectural culture, modern materials and advanced technology, it
becomes the modern architecture of “cultural continuity, local evolution”, different from that of “cultural transplant” in ports,
commercial cities and developed cities. The study of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region modern manor contributes to folk
development path and evolution laws of architectural cultural exchange. By presenting absorption and integration abilities and
mechanisms of traditional architectural culture on the outside world, expanding the types, perspectives, and methods of modern
architecture research, it has important academic value and realistic needs. |
