Abstract: |
Streets, as a concentrated carrier of daily traffic life and social culture, reflect
the style and characteristics of the city, and are an important object of urban safety
governance and public space design. Street safety is an important part of urban safety.
Nowadays, street safety is facing a complicated and urgent situation, and the safety
of urban streets is gradually decreasing. Understanding the progress of street safety
research can provide an important scientific basis for evaluating and guiding urban safety
construction.
With the substantial increase in the number of research documents, the time-
consuming and repetitive searching of a large number of documents is prone to be
disturbed by factors such as readers’ subjective preferences. The traditional literature
analysis methods have obvious limitations and are qualitatively explored. The method is
difficult to reveal the knowledge structure and overall characteristics of street safety research
at home and abroad in a short time, and it cannot intuitively and clearly summarize the main
content of the research and the potential knowledge it contains. It is difficult to objectively
grasp the breadth and depth of current research content in traditional literature combing
methods. CiteSpace, as an important tool for the visualization and analysis of current literature
information, can provide technical support for mining the network structure and cutting-edge
trends of research knowledge.
Based on the Web of Science and CNKI database, taking street safety literature from
2000 to 2019 as the research object, through a combination of quantitative analysis and
manual review, a quantitative analysis of 2142 documents is carried out to objectively and
quantitatively present the current street safety research literature overview and development
context. Comparing the two samples of literature publication year, subject distribution, journal
publication volume, main research institutions and geographic distribution, key word co-
occurrence and other data analysis, it can be found that from the statistical point of view of
the number of documents, domestic research is experiencing a gestation period and sudden
changes. After entering a period of high incidence, the attention of street safety related issues
has risen rapidly in the past 10 years, and the number of papers published in policy research and
engineering science and technology journals is high, indicating that street safety research has
been affected at the management and technical levels. However, comparing the measurement
results of the two databases, the number of keyword terms, the number of clustering groups, and the degree of diversification of clustering subject terms, etc., all show that the breadth and depth of domestic related research is still higher
than that of developed countries. There are also many differences in the degree of attention and emerging hotspots in the field of street safety at
home and abroad, which are closely related to factors such as national conditions, national policies, cultural life, operational mechanisms, and
technical aspects.
Furthermore, it systematically reveals the three key areas of street safety research: the relationship between street safety and people, the
relationship between street safety and things, and the relationship between street safety and the environment. The research of “street safety and
people” started early, but most of the researches rarely discuss from the perspective of users’ psychological safety perception, and it will still be
the mainstream of research in this field in the future. “Street safety and objects” is the main part of the current research, which extends from the
early single-stage research to the complete cycle research of “theory-design-management-implementation”. The research on “street safety and
environment” is in a stage of rapid increase, and with climate change and technological development, environmental issues are the core contents
of its next focus. It’s expected that it will provide references for expanding the content of domestic street safety research and clarifying future
development directions.
For the current researches on street safety in my country, due to the lag in research time, technical means, and subject recognition,
scholars pay more attention to and discuss the characteristics of a certain type of street or a certain environmental safety element to conduct
investigations, evaluations and simulation experiments. There is a lack of systematic evaluation of street safety, revealing the relationship
and mechanism of action between different types of streets and different environmental elements. At the same time, most studies still use
traditional qualitative research methods such as behavioral observation, contextual differences, and inductive deduction. The research
paradigm adheres to conventions, and it is urgent to integrate cutting-edge theories and technologies. It should be clearly aware that
although the domestic research on street safety is showing a rapid growth trend, there is still a lot of room for improvement in areas such
as building an overall research system for street safety. |
