Teaching Explorat ion Through Interdiscipl inar ity Across Life Science and LandscapeArchitecture Based on Course Practices in Tongji University and University of Hawaii
CHEN Jing,LI Wenmin
Abstract:
Landscape Architecture (LA) is a comprehensive discipline with a long history connecting and integrating with Architecture, Urban Planning, Arts, Life Science and other disciplines, meanwhile interdisciplinary studies usually can contribute to original achievements both in research and teaching. In order to solve the large number of issues in human settlements emerged from the process of rapid urbanization in China, it is urgent for LA to cultivate research and applied professionals who can develop a broad vision, multidisciplinary background and innovative consciousness, and who can challenge the complex environmental problems. In order to strengthen students’ awareness of innovation and creativity, elective courses in LA from Tongji University and University of Hawaii at Manoa were used as examples to discuss how to combine theory teaching and design practices, classroom teaching and extra-curricular innovation projects, and we proposed to gradually guide students into independent research based on the comprehensive and interdisciplinary course practice training. Based on the experiences and lessons from interdisciplinary teaching across Life Science and LA, “Small Clues Tell”, we found that our ‘non-biological specialty’ engineering students raised their interests in Life Science, and their enthusiasm and awareness of innovation and creativity have also been improved through hands-on practices, and their abilities to analyze and solve the actual problems in LA engineering and techniques have been strengthened as well.
