Study-Learning Collaboration: The Evolution, Design Strategies and Enlightenment of Yale University’s Residential Colleges

    Abstract:

    University residential colleges have unique value in promoting the all-round development of students by reshaping the educational nature of student residences. However, their educational concept of residential-study collaboration is difficult to fully implement in practice in China, which restricts the educational function. The United States started early in the construction of residential colleges. The residential college system promoted by Yale University has a history of nearly 100 years and has achieved great results. Therefore, this paper takes the construction experience of Yale University"s residential colleges as an example to analyze and sort out its residential-study collaboration strategies at the two levels of educational system construction and spatial environment design. The inspiration for my country is that: at the overall level, first clarify the role positioning of residential colleges in residential colleges, and then jointly practice the concept of residential-study collaboration from three aspects: spatial environment, curriculum activities and personnel structure; at the spatial level, pay attention to the compatibility of residential functions and educational functions, including three design strategies: using daily life space organization layout, expanding the basic functions of daily life space and creating a place atmosphere with a sense of belonging and culture.
