Competition for urban planning schemes has become an important means to improve the quality of program preparation. This article firstly summarizes the problems and deficiencies of the urban planning competitions in the past. Then, based on the case of the international consultation on urban design for Coastal Zone in Bao’an, Shenzhen, it reviews and explains the model of the international consultation workshop, including the background, the preliminary work and process control of competition, etc., and summarizes the characteristics that are different from the traditional model, in order to provide references for the international consulting practices of urban design.
