Abstract:Vernacular architecture in the Chinese context is often misunderstood as a binary? notion as against the “urban,” the “modern,”or the“western.”The case study discusses on the? general discrepancy between the “inside”and“outside”of vernacular architecture, or between? its new program and assigned traditional fa?ade. It argues that in contemporary China,a? collaged“vernacular?architecture”is inevitable, making the static“style”out of question. The? contemporary vernacular architecture will need“build the site,”reconfiguring the general? context of space-making from scratch.By systematically creating new local characteristics,? architecture does not adapt itself to landscape settings but invent a landscape of its own.
