Abstract:New Urbanism is a movement promoting people-oriented design trend. Its emphasis on making built environment pleasant for people and supporting human’s social activities through planning and design provides positive references for urban planning of walking intervention. Firstly, this paper summarizes the ideas of new urbanism for promoting pedestrian activity through analyzing its concept and development type. Then, it further analyzes the walking performance of new urbanism through literature review, and concludes that the characteristics of proximity, connectivity and place of built environment play an active role in walking intervention. Finally, combining Chinese actual situation, it proposes urban spatial planning strategies of walking intervention from urban and community level, while further elaborating the applicability of planning and design strategies of new urbanism in China.
