| Abstract: |
| Resilience is a positive concept that emphasizes the resilience of a system. The resilience of
settlement culture refers to the ability of settlement cultural systems to adapt, recover, and regenerate
in the face of various challenges and changes. The settlement culture resilience pursues the
coordinated development of culture, society, and environment, which can avoid generalization and
promote the sustainable inheritance of settlement culture comprehensively. At the same time, research
on the resilience of settlement culture closely focuses on the resilience performance of culture in social
changes, exploring how settlement culture maintains vitality and adaptability in uncertain and complex
environments, and providing theoretical and practical basis for cultural construction. In addition,
research on the resilience of settlement culture can provide theoretical and practical support for the
development of local cultural industries, helping cultural enterprises maintain innovation and promote
the healthy development of local cultural industries in the face of market competition and external
environmental changes. The settlement culture in the northern farming pastoral ecotone is related to
the culture and ethnic identity within the zone, carrying the historical context of various ethnic groups
within the zone, embodying the spiritual values and ways of thinking of each ethnic group, and is
conducive to enhancing national cultural confidence and cohesion. Strengthening the settlement
cultural resilience in the northern agricultural pastoral ecotone is an inevitable choice for its
sustainable cultural development, as well as the creative transformation and innovative development of
traditional Chinese culture. As a cultural transitional zone where northern nomadic culture and
agricultural culture blend, the northern farming pastoral ecotone in northern China constitutes the
forefront of communication between northern nomadic and agricultural peoples. Some large-scale
ethnic migrations and cultural exchanges in Chinese history have occurred here, leaving diverse and
integrated historical and cultural landscapes and cultural heritage for the settlements within the belt.
However, as a dynamic region formed under the long-term influence of unstable human activities and
natural factors, the human land relationship in the northern farming pastoral ecotone is complex and
has undergone drastic evolution. It is not only an ecologically vulnerable zone, but also a typical
cultural vulnerable zone. Due to the complex and drastic evolution of human-land relationships, the
resilience development of settlement culture within the belt is looking poor particularly. By
introducing the resilience research paradigm, a systematic evaluation system for the cultural resilience
of settlements in the northern farming pastoral ecotone is constructed. The evaluation system includes
four subsystems: cultural heritage resilience, cultural value resilience, social network resilience, and
resource and environmental resilience. There are eight primary indicators, including the integrity of
material culture, the continuity of intangible culture, the stability of cultural identity, the breadth of
cultural promotion, the closeness of geographical relationships, the elasticity of social environment,
the coordination of ecological environment, and the sustainability of resource utilization, as well as 20
specific indicators. Finally, an empirical study was conducted using Damao Banner in Inner Mongolia
as an example. Results indicate that the settlement cultural resilience in the farming pastoral ecotone ofnorthern China is generally low, with the influence of cultural inheritance resilience, cultural value resilience, social network resilience, and resource and
environmental resilience decreasing in order. Specifically, in the resilience subsystem of cultural inheritance, both the integrity of material culture and the
continuity of non-material culture have a significant impact on the resilience of settlement culture. Among them, the impact brought by the latter is particularly
strong, manifested in the serious loss of inheritors and inheritance space. In the subsystem of cultural value resilience, the stability of cultural identity
contributes the most to the resilience of settlement culture. Cultural identity is the foundation of cultural value resilience. The lack of cultural identity among
residents makes it difficult to incorporate “place” into the identity structure of “self”, which is not conducive to the formation of resilience in the cultural values
of settlements. In the resilience subsystem of social networks, the resilience of the social environment and the closeness of geographical relationships, which
lead to a decrease in social network stability, both play important roles. In the index layer of social environmental resilience, the decline in social vitality and
the strengthening of negative psychological effects caused by population aging and structural imbalance are external manifestations of the weakening of social
network resilience. Among the indicators of geographical closeness, the decline in residents’ willingness to stay in their homeland, the alienation of
neighborhood relationships, and the weakening of ethnic belonging are internalized factors that weaken the resilience of social networks. In the subsystem of
resource and environmental resilience, the impact of various elements on settlement cultural resilience is relatively small, but grassland environment and
livestock resources are slightly higher. The reason is that a stable grassland environment and sustained livestock resources are the foundation for the resilient
development of grassland settlement culture. The continuous decline in grassland coverage and livestock carrying capacity is bound to have a negative impact
on the cultural resilience of their settlements. Firstly, the research aims to explore quantitative measurement methods for the settlement cultural system
resilience, and stimulate “resilience thinking” about the development of settlement culture. Secondly, it aims to enrich the content, perspective, and dimensions
of resilience research. Thirdly, it aims to provide a basis for improving the settlement cultural adaptability and sustainable development in the farming pastoral
ecotone of north China. |
