Analysis of design subjectivity between architects and artificial intelligence from theperspective of synergetics

Abstract:
With the increasingly deep and widespread application of artificial intelligence technology in the architecture field, architectural design models are undergoing a profound intelligent transformation. While this trend brings innovative opportunities to the industry, it also presents architects with a core challenge: how to re-establish their unique value and professional positioning within the new paradigm of AI proliferation. Clarifying the respective areas of expertise of architects and AI, as well as the working relationship between the two, has become key to constructing highquality future human habitats. Although existing research has explored human-computer interaction from perspectives such as human-machine symbiosis, automation models, and generative design, most findings focus on specific stages like drawing rendering or inspiration generation. There is still a lack of a comprehensive theoretical framework for analyzing the collaborative relationship between architects and AI from the perspective of the entire architectural design workflow. To address this research gap, this paper introduces synergetics as the core theoretical framework. This study first demonstrates the high compatibility between architectural design and synergetics: architectural design, as a macroscopically ordered complex system, contains internal stage subsystems (e.g., programming, schematic design, construction documents) and elemental subsystems (e.g., design agent, design tools, design product). The system’s evolution from disorder to order results precisely from the synergistic interactions of these internal subsystems. Furthermore, this paper systematically reviews the evolution of architectural design models, revealing how tool iterations—from hand-drawing to BIM, and then to AI—have reshaped the design process and facilitated AI’s transition from an auxiliary tool to a role possessing dual attributes of both “subject” and “tool”. The core methodology of this research lies in applying the order parameter principle of synergetics. This paper innovatively proposes quantifying the order parameter using the number of “subject-object” associations to describe the strength of synergistic interactions between subsystems. By constructing a “subject-tool-product” system analysis model covering the three stages of programming, schematic design, and construction documents, it calculated and analyzed the proportions of architects and AI acting as subjects (leaders) and objects (assistants) in each stage. The research finds that throughout the entire architectural design process, architects consistently maintain a dominant role as the innovative subject. Their subjectivity proportion is the highest, although it slightly decreases as the process advances. AI primarily manifests as a highly objective, repetitive subject, with its subjectivity proportion showing an increasing trend. The synergistic relationship between them is essentially a slaving relationship between the “creative subject” and the “repetitive subject”. The architect’s “value-driven intention” (slow variable) dominates and calibrates AI’s “function-driven intention” (fast variable), ensuring that design outcomes consistently serve human value orientations. A case study (Xu Weiguo’s “3D Printed Coffee House”) verifies the operability of this analytical model, visually demonstrating how the architect leads value judgments in a specific project, while AI efficiently performs generation and optimization tasks. This paper concludes that the core value of architects in the AI era lies in their irreplaceable role as innovative subjects, leading value-driven,creative work. AI, as an exceptional repetitive subject, is responsible for efficiently completing functional, repetitive tasks. Their collaboration jointly propels the architectural design system towards greater efficiency and order. By applying synergetics and a quantitative order parameter method, this study provides a systematic new perspective and theoretical tool for understanding human-AI collaboration. It not only addresses the industry’s concern about “whether architects will be replaced” but also, on epistemological and methodological levels, offers necessary theoretical exploration and practical guidance for consolidating the architect's leading role in innovation and promoting the sustainable development of the architecture discipline in the age of AI.
